Makerspace or STEM space in your school or classroom doesn't have to be complicated. Projects and challenges for kids don’t have to be complicated either. Some of the best projects use recycled or repurposed items like cardboard, tubes, and egg cartons, which means challenges can be inexpensive as well. Teaching hands-on sustainability concepts is hard to conceptualize in a classroom, let alone adapting it for remote or virtual learning. This session is a walkthrough of multiple lessons with home-based supplies and Green STEM kits, and how they can be used to translate climate change and sustainability related topics to an elementary based audience.

Encouraging student agency in learning involves offering students choice while giving them space to share their voice and direct their own learning. One of the simplest ways to start encouraging student agency is through the use of student choice boards. In this session, participants will discuss how to adapt this versatile teaching strategy to suit the needs of learners, promote student agency, and increase student engagement.

This session will provide a “snapshot” of how to use children's literature and the 5E model of instruction. The widened scope will place emphasis on the Elaborate phase of the 5E model. Prepare to focus your lens on the importance of extending instruction through the process of coding different bots. Through the use of bots, lessons can be broadened to highlight other subject areas such as ELA, Math, and Science. When putting the “T” in STEM into action, bots are a great way for students to use coding and problem solving skills to showcase their thinking and learning.

Knowledge of word parts has a broad impact across foundational literacy components, and is a powerful tool to help your struggling readers. Participants will look at both the research-based perspective on why we teach affixes and roots, and spend the majority of their time on practical strategies to use in whole class or small group settings.

It may be difficult to maintain a resource-balanced classroom or laboratory across the STEAM disciplines, particularly when working within the confines of a virtual platform.
